Questions
What is Taekwondo and how is it different than other Martial Arts?
Taekwondo was developed from ancient Martial Arts which were used for self-defense and combat. Karate is from Japan, Kungfu is from China, and Taekwondo is from Korea. Taekwondo uses kicks more than other Martial Arts making it ideal for improving balance, flexibility, agility, and conditioning. Taekwondo is also the only one of these Martial Arts that is an Olympic sport.
How will my children and I benifit from Taekwondo?
The sport side of Taekwondo has cardio, strength, and endurance training. To increase flexibility there is stretching and repetitive kicking. The target and kicking training increases speed, agility, balance, and coordination. This physical training will help you get full use out of the self-defense techniques learned.
In the art side of Taekwondo we will learn traditional Taekwondo forms. Mastering forms exercises the brain in memorizing the steps, focusing on the details, and listening to instruction. With forms we also work on rhythm and breathing techniques.
Behavior is improved through the structure and atmosphere of a Taekwondo class. With each belt level students will focus on and study one of the five traits of a Taekwondo Master including courtesy, integrity, self-control, perseverance, and indomitable spirit.
Who is Taekwondo for?
Taekwondo is great for everyone, regardless of fitness level, coordination, or experience. All you need is interest and we’ll give you the tools necessary to succeed. At TAEKWONDOWAY, we have open enrollment, so beginners are always welcome. Our trial program starts with a one-on-one lesson to introduce you to the basics of Taekwondo and to answer any questions you may have before starting the group lessons. The belt system used in Taekwondo allows students to train at their own pace and to improve their physical conditioning one step at a time.
What age can my child start?
Children ages four and up will be able to take the greatest advantage from Taekwondo classes. Starting at age four, your child can participate in our trial lesson program, which allows our instructors to work with them one on one and evaluate their readiness for group classes. Our staff will then use their experience to recommend the best course of action for you and your child.
Can I take classes with my children?
We encourage everyone to take Taekwondo lessons with their children! It is such a unique way to spend time together and to grow as a family. Where else can you learn something new and exercise together? Also be sure to ask about our family rates.
